Golden Eagle Project

Autumn Term 2018

Philip from the South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project has been visiting the Kirkhope & Yarrow over 12 weeks and teaching us all about Golden Eagles. We have learned so much and have all really enjoyed this project. Thanks Philip!

Spittal Beach

The beach trip was great fun!  We played in the sea, went in the waterpark and enjoyed some ice-cream!

Walk up The Three Bretheren

We walked all the way up the Three Brethren and then around the site of the Battle of Philiphaugh.  We thoroughly deserved our icecream at the Waterwheel cafe before a quick look at the Salmon Viewing Centre.

Standard Bearer's Visit

June 2018

Royal Burgh Standard Bearer Peter Forrest and his Attendants came to visit along with Selkirk Silver Band.  We sang Common Riding songs and the winners of the Art and Essay competitions were given medals.  Afterwards there was a game of football at the sports field.  What a great community event!

Hawick Trip

May 2018

We went to Wilton Park Museum in Hawick where we had fun dressing up as mini beasts, looking at fossils and afterwards we loved playing in the park.

Harestanes and Woodside Trip

May 2018

At Harestanes we went on a nature trail.  We collected data on birdlife, bee life, mini beasts, animals, flowers and trees.  We used the data to create graphs and charts.  Afterwards we went to Woodside Garden Centre and bought plants for the school garden. It was great fun.

Viking Visitors

May 2018

We had a visit from Vikings at school, they even brought their tent with them!  We dressed up in viking clothes, tasted viking food, made candles and necklaces and even got to try out their bows and arrows and swords!  What an amazing day!

Climbing at EICA Ratho

The P4/5/6 boys were very lucky to have a climbing lesson at the EICA in Ratho.  They gained new skills, increased their confidence and had a really great time in the process!  

Eco Crafts at the Discovery Den

The P4-6 boys had a lovely morning at the Discovery Den making bee bombs and wildflower pots to sell at the Selkirk pop-up shop.  

Netherurd Residential

May 2018

P4-6 from Kirkhope joined Yarrow on a fantastic residential trip to Netherurd.  They did some amazing activities including zorbing, archery, zip wire, vertical playpen and a nature trail.  They even toasted marshmallows around the campfire!

Commonwealth Passport Success

Yarn Bombers

The boys have become skilled knitters with help from the amazing Linda and Maggie!  They have 'Yarn Bombed' the school gate for Easter. If you're passing, please stop to have a look. The display features pom pom chicks and a life size pom pom lamb. Well done boys!

Burns Afternoon with Yarrow Primary School

We had a great time celebrating Burns Day with our friends at Yarrow Primary School. There was singing, dancing, music, poetry and we mustn't forget the haggis, neeps and tatties!

During our Christmas jumper day activities, Kirkhope school had 2 special surprise guests - John Lamont MP and Rachael Hamilton MSP! They came in to surprise their Christmas card competition winner, Alfie Gorrill and presented him with a Lego Technic set as a prize. 
WELL DONE ALFIE!!!! Your card will be in 5000 households this year!

Intergenerational Project with Borders Youth Theatre

October 2017

The children brought stories from the past to life through the inter-generational project with Borders Youth Theatre and some of the older residents from the valleys. What a wonderful experience and some wonderful stories!

End of Term Trip to the Beach!

We had a brilliant trip to Spittal Beach in June.  It was a bit windy but we still had great fun jumping in the waves and eating ice cream!

Eco Fun Day

Saturday 3rd June 11am

Our 3rd annual Eco Fun Day was huge success.  We enjoyed live mini beast racing, eco arts & crafts, bird & bug box building, a scavenger hunt, hook-a-duck delicious home baking and a tasty bbq.  We even had a VIP special visit from the Standard Bearer.

P6/7 Residential to Lockerbie Manor

The P6s and 7s from Kirkhope and Yarrow went to Lockerbie Manor for their annual residential trip.  Highlights included canoeing, mountain biking and rifle shooting.

Red Nose Day

Euro Quiz

A team of P6s and P7s took part in the Scottish Borders Euro Quiz at Galashiels Academy.  They did very well given the tough questions!

Maths Curriculum Workshop

Parents and pupils returned to school for our maths curriculum workshop. Lots of fun activities were tried, including number songs, place value games, numicon and interactive games on the laptops. Thankyou to Mrs Mitchell, Mrs Wilson and Miss Kiernan for delivering an informative and enjoyable session - and showing that maths is FUN!!

Nursery Stay'n'Play Sessions

Every Thursday 9.20 - 10am

We welcome parents, carers and under 5's to visit on Thursday mornings for our "Stay'n'Play" session from 9.20 - 10am, a great way to see the nursery in action. This has proved invaluable to new starts, allowing them to familiarise themselves with the nursery and staff, whilst having the security of a family member with them.

It is also a great opportunity for current parents to view learning logs and to see what activities the children are involved in.

French Cafe

December 2016

The GP room was transformed into a French Cafe with a tasty menu of "soupe du jour", "baguette" and even "crêpes" for pudding.  The children cooked, took orders and served speaking in French throughout!  A great turnout of customers from the village all agreed how excellent the service and food were.  Très Bien!

Hosanna Rock!

December 2016

Our Christmas Concert this year was a unique retelling of the Nativity written by P6/7 called Hosanna Rock!  Amazing acting and superb singing by all the children, including the nursery class, made a for a great show.  The costumes and props, all made by the children, added to the spectacle. 

Bonfire Night and Fireworks Display

Saturday 5th November 2016

Another amazing evening!  The weather was perfect and the bonfire was roaring.  The fireworks were awesome and refreshments hit the spot.  We raised a fantastic total of £698.75!  Huge thanks to all the helpers.

Halloween Party

Our Halloween Party was spooktacular!  Outrageous outfits and gory games made for a really fun evening.  We even managed to raise just under £100 for Friends of Kirkhope.

Growing pupil numbers and Nursery re-opening

As our school roll has reached 20 we are delighted to have 2 composite classes this year.  P1-5 will have Mrs Wilson and Miss Kiernan whilst Mrs Mitchell will take P6-7.

Eco Fun Day

Saturday 4th June, 11am - 4pm

Our annual Eco Fun Day was a great success again this year.  Children enjoyed bird box building, bug house building, eco arts & crafts and an eco nature quiz trail around the village.

Sports Day

Friday 27th May

Our joint Sports Day with Yarrow Primary School was held on 6th June in glorious sunshine at the sports field in Ettrickbridge.  It was great fun and even some parents got in the competition!

Official Opening of the Outdoor Classroom

 Our new "Discovery Den" was officially opened by Donna Manson, SBC's Service Director for Children & Young People, on Friday 22nd April 2016. A fantastic morning was had by all including pupils, staff, community members and councillors. Thanks to all who came along to support the project. 

Burns Celebration with Yarrow Primary School

On January 26th pupils and staff joined Yarrow Primary School for an afternoon of Scottish song, poetry and a ceilidh.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

December 2015

A fantastic perfomance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory took place in early December.  So much hard work had been put in - the amazing props included a TV and a boat, the costumes were dazzling and all the children performed confidently.  Huge thank yous to all the staff for making it such a great spectacle to watch.  It was topped off by a scrumdidlyumtious selection of chocolate goodies and even a chocolate fountain served to the lucky audience afterwards.

Kirhope Wins a Donkey!

November 2015

Pupils entered the Scott's Selkirk Sacrecrow competition with a stunning Willie Wonka lookalike complete with Golden Tickets and pocketfuls of sweets!  They were delighted when they won the first prize - adoption of Horace-Pierre from the Scottish Borders Donkey Sanctuary.  They are planning to visit him soon.

Bonfire & Fireworks Display

Saturday 7th November

The annual bonfire and fireworks display took place on Saturday 7th November, organised by Friends of Kirkhope with the help of community volunteers.  A great crowd turned out to join the procession to the bonfire with glowsticks and torches in hand.  Hot soup, teas, coffees & hot chocolate served from the cattle trailer kitchen helped to keep everyone warm - thanks mums!  And an elite team of dads set off a fantastic pyrotechnic display to wow the crowd!  A big thank you to all who worked so hard to make the evening a success.

Halloween Party

Saturday 31st October 4-6pm

Friends of Kirkhope held their annual Halloween Party in the village hall on Saturday 31st October.  Fantastic costumes, gory food, grizzly games and lots of fun.  Thanks to all who helped make the evening such a success!

Our new Outdoor Classroom is complete!

We are delighted to announce that our new Outdoor Classroom is now finished.  A big thank you to all those involved in the process.  We are looking forward to using it soon.

Tag Rugby

June 2015

On Wednesday 3rd June the P5-7s took part in a tag rugby festival at Philiphaugh with all the other Selkirk area primary schools. Although we didn’t win anything we all had lots of fun!

STOP PRESS! Good News!  

May 2015

We have been awarded a grant from the Langhope Rig Wind Farm Community Fund for an outdoor classroom.


Work has now commenced on our outdoor classroom. The concrete base has now been installed and the surrounding field area levelled and seeded. We are now ready for the classroom building which is presently being built off site and hopefully all should be complete around the middle of October.

Annual Countryside Day

May 2015

On Tuesday 19th May the P5s from both Kirkhope and Yarrow attended the annual Countryside Day at Springwood Park in Kelso. Highlights included milking a cow and seeing baby animals including calves, chicks and piglets.

Eco Day!

May 2015

On Saturday 9th May we held our Eco Fun Day. It was a massive success and we hope to hold the event again next year. The day ran from 10am-4pm and included a number of hands-on workshops; children made bird boxes and ‘bug hotels’, participated in eco art and walked an eco-quiz nature trail around the village. Hot food was supplied all day by the Ettrick Valley Smokehouse.


The aim was to promote the importance of sustainability, and the little things that we can all do that make a difference.

Musical Creations

April 2015

During the winter term (Jan-March) the pupils were involved in song writing projects with Youth Music Initiative tutors Jenni Borthwick and Shona Mooney to create their own lyrics, melodies and musical accompaniment ideas.


They learned how to play the tin whistle and performed to parents at our Easter Service.

Pop-Up Success

A massive thanks to everyone who contributed to and supported the pop-up shop. We made a fantastic £290.10 for the Friends of Kirkhope fund.

We also made a good start at telling people about our up and coming Eco Fun Day.

Bag Printing Fun

We were very impressed with the children's creativity and hard work as they hand printed cotton shopping bags to sell at the pop-up shop in Selkirk on 28th March.

Roundhouses and History in Action

March 2015

As part of the Selkirk Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS), we have been learning about the history of Selkirk.


We have learned about the Saxons and even and built our own Roundhouses (smaller versions!). We had a visitor from the Trimontium Museum in Melrose and were able to enjoy a drama session in medieval costume, handle artifacts and even try medieval food.

Outdoor Classroom in Planning

As part of our ongoing ‘Outdoor Learning’ programme and Eco activities we have been planting trees in conjunction with The Woodland Trust.  We are hoping to secure funding to build an outdoor classroom soon.

“Fizz, Boom, Bang!”

Recently the science workshop “Fizz, Boom, Bang!” came to school and the children had great fun making explosions!

The school is fortunate to have the use of the amazing new state of the art MUGA (multi use games area) at the nearby community sports field, where we can participate in a wide range of games and activities. The latest sport being taught is hockey.

Big Drum Beats!

December 2014

The Big Drum workshops run by “Matt the Hat” throughout the autumn term 2014 were a huge success especially as we worked together with our partner school, Yarrow Primary.


The final concert was the highlight, with the P1-3s telling the story of the Hungry Foxes, whilst the P4-7s performed as the Reggae Drummers! What a treat for all the parents!
